Ιδρύθηκε από τον αυτοκράτορα Αδριανό το 132 μ.Χ. ως πολιτιστικό και εκπαιδευτικό κέντρο, με αιθούσες για παπύρους, αριθουσές διδασκαλίας και κιονοστοιχία.
Ο μεγαλύτερος ναός της αρχαίας Ελλάδας, αφιερωμένος στον Δία, ολοκληρώθηκε το 131 μ.Χ. από τον Αδριανό. Από τους 104 τεράστιους αρχικούς κίονες σώζονται 16 — αρκούν για να καταλάβετε την κλίμακα. Δίπλα θα δείτε την Πύλη του Αδριανού.
