🚢 First — find your gate
Piraeus port has 11 numbered gates (E1–E11), scattered around a 3-km perimeter. Different islands depart from different gates, and ferry tickets list a gate number that may not match what's printed on the actual berth that day. The clusters that matter to most visitors:
E1, E2 — Heraklion (Crete) and Chios/Lesbos
The southwest gate cluster. Closest to the metro station via a 7-10 minute walk.
E3 — Cyclades fast ferries
Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Ios — most of the popular Cyclades routes leave from here. Walk to metro: 10-12 minutes.
E5, E6 — Saronic Gulf
Aegina, Hydra, Spetses, Poros — the day-trip islands. Right opposite the metro and tram terminus. 3-5 minute walk.
E7, E8 — Cyclades and Crete (slow ferries)
Blue Star and ANEK conventional ferries. Further east; walk to metro 12-15 minutes.
E9, E10, E11 — Dodecanese, North Aegean
Long-haul Aegean routes. Furthest from the metro; budget 18-25 minute walk or take the free port shuttle.
🚇 Option 1 — Metro (cheapest, easiest)
- Metro Line 1 (green) and Line 3 (blue) both terminate at Piraeus station, opposite the eastern edge of the port (near gate E5/E6).
- Fare: €1.20 single (90 minutes including transfers). NOT €9 — only the airport segment uses the higher fare. Piraeus to Syntagma is the standard city fare.
- Travel time: Piraeus → Monastiraki on Line 1 ~22 min; Piraeus → Syntagma on Line 3 ~17 min. Both run every 5-10 minutes.
- Operating hours: 05:30 to 00:30 (01:00 weekends).
- Best for: Solo travellers, budget travellers, anyone with manageable luggage. (See metro lines guide.)
🚖 Option 2 — Taxi
€15–€22
Day rate to central Athens (Syntagma, Plaka, Acropolis, Victoria). 25-40 minutes depending on traffic.
€20–€30
Night rate (00:00–05:00) for the same trip.
€55–€75
Piraeus → Athens Airport. Fixed flat rate of €70 day / €85 night. (See flat-rate taxi guide.)
€2 luggage surcharge
Per piece over 10 kg; legitimate for the port-area pickup (taxi tariff includes a luggage line).
Use the official taxi rank at gate E1 or the rank near the metro station, or app-book FREE NOW / Beat / Uber. Avoid drivers who approach you inside the gates — they're sometimes unlicensed or charge fixed inflated fares. (See taxi apps guide.)
🚌 Option 3 — Bus
- Bus 040 — runs 24/7 between Syntagma and Piraeus. €1.20 single. Slower than metro (~50 minutes) but the night-time alternative.
- X80 — Acropolis express (cruise season) — direct from Piraeus to Acropolis area. €5 premium fare. Useful for cruise visitors with limited shore time. (See buses and trolleys guide.)
- X96 — airport express — direct Piraeus ↔ Athens Airport. €6 single, runs 24/7, ~55-90 minutes depending on traffic. The night alternative for catching an early flight.
🧠 The decision framework (under a minute)
Pick your option in 30 seconds
- Solo or couple, light luggage, daytime: Metro. €1.20 each.
- 3-4 people with luggage, daytime: Taxi. Per-person ~€5 each, faster door-to-door.
- Late night / metro closed: Taxi or bus 040.
- Going straight to airport: Bus X96 (€6) or taxi flat rate (€70 day / €85 night).
- Cruise visitor with 4-hour shore stop: Bus X80 (€5) direct to Acropolis.
🚪 Walking from the port to metro/tram
Most ferry passengers walk from the gate to the metro/tram station. Distances vary:
- From E5/E6 (Saronic, Aegina/Hydra): 3-5 minutes, mostly flat.
- From E1/E2/E3 (Cyclades fast, Crete): 7-10 minutes.
- From E7/E8 (slow Cyclades, Crete): 12-15 minutes.
- From E9/E10/E11 (Dodecanese): 18-25 minutes — consider the free port shuttle bus or a short taxi.
The port has a free internal shuttle bus connecting the more distant gates to the central terminal area. Look for the white-and-blue bus with "Port Shuttle" markings; it runs every 15-20 minutes during ferry-arrival peaks.
🧳 Luggage and accessibility
Piraeus is wheelchair-friendly in principle but the port distances are long. The metro station is fully accessible. Tram is fully step-free. Buses 040 and X96 are accessible (low-floor on the newer fleet). For travellers with mobility issues, a taxi is the most stress-free option.
⚠️ Common scams and pitfalls
- Unlicensed drivers approaching at the gate. Refuse politely; walk to the official rank or use an app.
- "The metro is on strike" claims. Verify on OASA app or Google Maps. If true, take bus 040.
- "There's a special airport flat rate from Piraeus" demands above €85. The night rate caps at €85.
- Pickpockets in the metro to Athens. The Piraeus → Monastiraki / Syntagma corridor is a known pickpocket hotspot. Keep bags front-facing.
🚇 Key route: Piraeus → Syntagma

Taxi
~25-30 min daytime, €15-€20.
Bus 040
~50 min, €1.20. The 24/7 backup.
