Walking to Larissis Station from Victoria — Trains, Suburban Rail and the Airport

📅 May 07, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read ✍️ Angel Athens Team
Most guests do not realise that Athens' central railway station is a six-minute walk from the apartment — and that from there a direct suburban train runs straight to the airport. It is also the departure point for the trains north to Thessaloniki and Meteora. Here is the honest walk and what waits at the end.

🚶 The 6-minute walk

From Victoria Square / Heyden area, the walk to Larissis Railway Station is short and flat. Three reasonable routes:

Route 1 — Via Ioulianou (recommended)

Walk west on Ioulianou Street, cross Acharnon, continue to Filis, then north 1 block to Larissis. ~6 minutes. Quiet residential character. (See Ioulianou walking guide.)

Route 2 — Around Pedion Areos perimeter

Walk west via 28 Octovriou (Patission), then around the south edge of the park along Alexandras Avenue, then north to the station. ~9 minutes. Wider, busier, more visible.

Route 3 — Direct via Filis Street

South on Filis to Liosion, west to Konstantinoupoleos, north into the station. ~7 minutes. The most direct line on a map.

🚆 What's at Larissis Station

  • Hellenic Train intercity — long-distance trains to Thessaloniki (~4 hrs), Patras via Korinth (~3 hrs), Kalambaka for Meteora (~5 hrs).
  • Proastiakós (Suburban Rail) — direct to Athens Airport (~38 min, €10) and to other Attica destinations. (See Proastiakós guide.)
  • Athens Metro Line 2 (red) — "Larissa Stathmos" station, integrated walkway to the trains. Connects to Syntagma in 4 minutes (3 stops via Omonoia, Panepistimio).
  • Cafés and a bakery inside the main hall.
  • Ticket counters and vending machines.
  • Left-luggage office — small fee per piece per day.
  • Taxi rank at the main entrance.

📋 Trains worth knowing about

Athens → Thessaloniki

~4 hours by ICE (intercity express). €25-€60 depending on class and advance booking. 5-7 daily departures.

Athens → Kalambaka (Meteora)

~5 hours direct, or ~5.5 hrs with change at Paleofarsalos. €20-€40. 2-3 daily departures.

Athens → Patras

Combined train + bus via Korinth. ~3 hrs total. €15-€25. The Korinth-Patras section is bus replacement during ongoing rail works.

Athens → Airport (Proastiakós)

~38 minutes direct. €10. Every 25-40 minutes during operating hours (~05:30-22:30).

🎫 Buying tickets

  • Hellenic Train website (hellenictrain.gr) — book intercity tickets online. Recommended for Thessaloniki / Meteora trips. Reservations required for ICE trains.
  • Station ticket counters — open 06:00-22:00 most days. English-speaking agents available but lines can be long pre-departure.
  • Vending machines — sell Proastiakós tickets and short-distance regional. Card and cash accepted.
  • OASA app — Proastiakós airport tickets can be purchased and validated via app.

🚇 The metro connection

Larissis Station is on Metro Line 2 ("Larissa Stathmos"). The metro entrance is a 4-minute indoor walk from the train platforms — well-signed in English, follow "Metro" arrows. From "Larissa Stathmos":

  • 3 stops to Syntagma via Omonoia and Panepistimio (~6 minutes including waits).
  • 1 stop to Omonoia (~3 minutes).
  • Direct connection south to Acropolis area in ~10 minutes total.

🎯 The "trains for travellers" use cases

When Larissis Station saves you time

  1. Going to the airport with an early train. Proastiakós at ~05:30-06:00 beats waking up early for the metro Line 3 from Syntagma.
  2. Onward to Meteora. Direct train from Larissis to Kalambaka — no need for the Liosion bus station which is harder to reach.
  3. Day trip to Korinth or Loutraki. Proastiakós services run there in 1-1.5 hours.
  4. Onward to Thessaloniki. Modern ICE trains are competitive with flying once airport transfer time is added.
  5. Combined airport + rail trip — land at airport 14:00, Proastiakós to Larissis 14:50, change to ICE Thessaloniki 15:30. All in one building.

🛂 Practical station tips

  • Arrive 20-30 min before departure for intercity trains; tickets and seat reservations need to be checked.
  • Platforms can change last-minute — watch the departure boards.
  • Greek train announcements are made in Greek and English on intercity services; Proastiakós sometimes Greek only.
  • Bring water and snacks — onboard catering on Greek trains is limited or absent.
  • Greek trains are reasonably reliable but occasional delays of 15-30 min on long routes are common.

🛡️ Station safety and atmosphere

Larissis is a major transport hub with constant foot traffic. Daytime is busy and comfortable. Evening / late-night the station is quieter but lit and policed. Standard pickpocket awareness applies; transport hubs attract opportunists. Don't leave luggage unattended.

🍴 Eating at or near the station

  • Inside the station: bakery, café, kiosk for basics. Adequate for travel snacks.
  • 5-10 min walk: traditional tavernas in the Larissis / Sepolia residential streets — much better food than station fare.
  • Coming from Victoria, eat in your neighbourhood before walking — better quality, better prices.

🧳 Left-luggage

Larissis has a small left-luggage office near the main entrance. Charges per piece per day (€5-€8). Useful if your hotel checkout doesn't match your train departure. Other options: private left-luggage services in central Athens (Stasher, Bounce) often have lockers near the metro stations and may be cheaper.

♿ Accessibility

Larissis is fully step-free. Lifts connect platforms to the main hall and to the metro level. Wheelchair users can travel via Proastiakós and intercity with notice (call Hellenic Train 24h ahead for assistance booking).

🎯 FAQ

Is the walk from Victoria to Larissis safe?

Yes during the day. Evening is fine on main streets (Acharnon, Patission). After 23:00 take a taxi if you have luggage; not because the walk is dangerous, but because dragging a suitcase 6 minutes through residential streets is awkward.

Should I walk or take the metro from Victoria?

Walk — 6 minutes is faster than waiting for the metro at Victoria, riding to Larissa Stathmos, and walking out. Metro adds time; walking is direct.

Are train tickets cheaper in advance?

Yes for intercity (Thessaloniki, Meteora) — book 1-2 weeks ahead via hellenictrain.gr for the cheapest fares. Proastiakós airport ticket is fixed at €10 regardless of timing.

Can I use my Athens metro card?

Athena Card / OASA tickets work on Proastiakós within the urban zone (Larissis to airport requires the airport-zone fare). Intercity Hellenic Train requires separate tickets.

What if my train is cancelled?

Hellenic Train issues refunds or rebookings. Strikes occasionally affect rail; check the morning of travel. (See strikes guide.)
