📍 Sounion in one paragraph
Cape Sounion (Σούνιο, Soúnio) is the southernmost tip of Attica — a marble headland 70 m above the Aegean Sea, 65 km south-east of Athens. Topped by the Temple of Poseidon (~444 BCE), built during the same Pericles-era programme that produced the Parthenon, the cape was a sacred precinct for sailors entering and leaving the Saronic Gulf. The temple has 15 of its 34 original Doric columns standing today. The "sacred triangle" — Parthenon, Aphaia (Aegina), Poseidon (Sounion) — was visible from each of the three points on clear days. Today Sounion is the most accessible classical-Greek temple-with-sunset experience near Athens.

~€80-€120 each way. Convenient for groups of 3-4 (split cost) or specific timing. Plan return: limited returning taxis after sunset.
🏛️ The Temple of Poseidon
- ~444 BCE — built under Pericles' Athenian building programme. Replaced an earlier temple destroyed by the Persians in 480 BCE.
- Doric order, white marble from local quarries (similar to Parthenon's Pentelic).
- 34 original columns on the rectangular plan; 15 surviving today.
- Lord Byron's name — carved into one of the column bases (1810). Now glassed/protected. Famous graffiti.
- Smaller Temple of Athena nearby (less visible ruins) — second sanctuary at Sounion.
- Mythology: Aegeus, father of Theseus, supposedly threw himself from these cliffs (giving the Aegean its name) on seeing Theseus' black sail.
- Entry: €10 (combined Acropolis ticket valid).
🌅 Sunset timing
When to arrive for the perfect sunset
- Site closes 30 min before sunset officially — but in practice you should arrive 60-90 min before sunset to get position + photograph.
- Summer (June-August): sunset ~20:30-20:45. Arrive 19:00-19:15.
- Spring + Autumn (April-May, Sept-Oct): sunset ~19:00-20:00. Arrive 17:30-18:30.
- Winter (Nov-March): sunset ~17:00-17:45. Arrive 15:30-16:30.
- Best photography: 30 min before to 15 min after sunset. Columns silhouetted against orange sea.
- Worst overcrowding: peak summer organised tours arrive ~30 min before sunset. Beat them by arriving 60+ min before.
🏖️ The coastal route — Athenian Riviera + Sounion
The drive from Athens to Sounion is itself part of the experience. The E91 coast road hugs the Saronic shore, passing the Riviera neighbourhoods of Glyfáda, Vouliagméni, Várkiza, then Anávyssos + Lagonísi + Saronída + Lavrio (the active port). Many travellers combine Sounion with a Riviera beach stop earlier in the day. (See Riviera guide.)
🍴 Where to eat
- Sounion Beach tavernas at the foot of the cape — not gourmet but convenient. €25-€35 per person. Aegean Bay + similar.
- Lavrio (8 km north) — working port with proper fish tavernas. €25-€40 per person. Better food than Sounion-side.
- Anávyssos / Saronída tavernas on the way back to Athens — coastal Greek tavernas, mid-range. €20-€35 per person.
- Vouliagméni / Glyfáda — on the Riviera, more upmarket. €30-€60 per person.
- Snack at the site: small kiosk, basic. Bring water + snacks.
