🗑️ The Athens rubbish system in plain English
Athens uses kerbside wheelie-bins called kádoi (κάδοι). Most apartment buildings don't have internal rubbish areas — residents take bags down to the street and place them in the green bin nearest the building. There is no specific "bin day"; rubbish is collected most nights through the year (with reduced service on Sundays and major holidays).
🚮 The three bin types you'll see
Green bin (general waste)
Standard household rubbish. Tied bags only — loose rubbish attracts cats and rats and creates problems for collection crews. Located outside most buildings.
Blue bin (recycling)
Mixed paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass containers, metal cans. Greeks are pragmatic about sorting — anything visibly recyclable goes here. Less frequent (every 2-3 blocks) but well-marked.
Yellow bin (clothing / textiles)
For donating clothes and textiles. Less common; usually placed on selected corners by charities or the municipality.
Brown bin (organic — increasing rollout)
Food waste / organic. Rolling out across Athens, present in some neighbourhoods, missing from others. If absent, organics go in the green bin.
📍 Where to put the bag — Victoria specifics
- Most apartment streets in the Heyden / Aristotelous area have a green bin every 30-50 metres — outside one of the buildings on the block.
- Bags should be tied closed. Loose food rubbish creates problems with cats and rats.
- Don't leave bags next to the bin if it's full — push down gently, find the next bin. Bags on pavement create rat issues and €30-€80 fines for the apartment building.
- Late afternoon to night (17:00-23:00) is the standard time for taking rubbish out — collection truck rounds usually start late evening.
♻️ Recycling — what counts
- YES: clean cardboard (flatten boxes), paper, plastic bottles (rinsed), aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars (rinsed).
- NO: plastic bags, food-soiled paper (pizza boxes), small electronics, batteries, cooking oil.
- Batteries: special recycling boxes inside major supermarkets (AB Vassilopoulos, Sklavenitis) and at electronics stores. Not in any kerbside bin.
- Plastic bags themselves (the bag you carry shopping in): rinse and reuse, or specific in-store collection bins at supermarkets.
- Glass: standard practice is to put in the blue bin; some neighbourhoods have separate green-glass-only bins.

🎯 The "Victoria laundry strategy"
For a 7-day stay
- Bring 4-5 days' clothes; do one mid-stay laundry load.
- Drop off Monday morning, pick up Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. €12-€16 per load.
- Last load = the day before departure — no risk of clothes still wet.
- Don't include delicates / wool / silk in standard laundry — pay extra for dry cleaning if needed.
- Beachwear / sportswear can be hand-washed in apartment sink, hung on balcony — Athens dries clothes in 2-3 hours summer.
🪣 Apartment cleanliness practicalities
- Cleaning supplies are sold at supermarkets (AB Vassilopoulos, Sklavenitis) — bring nothing from home, basic dishwashing liquid + multi-surface cleaner ~€5 total. (See supermarkets guide.)
- Vinegar (xydi) — Greek go-to multi-surface cleaner, €1.50 per bottle.
- Athens water is hard — limescale builds on kettles, taps. Use vinegar weekly or descaler if staying longer.
- Bedbugs and pests are not a typical concern in modern apartments; if you see signs (bites, blood spots), contact host immediately.
🚿 Greek plumbing — important quirks
- Don't flush toilet paper. Older Athens plumbing has narrow pipes; toilet paper goes in the bin (lined with plastic) next to the toilet. Yes, really. Modern apartments may be fine; check the host's note. When in doubt, use the bin.
- Hot water heaters (boilers) are often switched on/off manually — check the wall switch labelled "Boiler" in the apartment. 30-60 min for a hot shower if it was off.
- Water pressure can vary, especially summer. Showers may slow during peak demand 18:00-22:00.
- Drains can be slow; minimise food waste in sinks.
🏛️ The kafeneío rules (extra)
If you want to leave laundry at a self-service while you wait, the laundrette often shares space with a kafeneío or has café seats inside. Order a freddo, watch your spin cycle. €3 for the coffee.
🎯 FAQ
Do laundrettes speak English?
Newer self-service ones often have English signage and instructions. Older neighbourhood spots may not, but the machines are intuitive (icons + minimal text). The drop-off service often involves writing your name + return time on a tag.
Can I do laundry on Sunday?
Self-service laundrettes are usually open 7 days/week; drop-off service may be closed Sundays. Plan for Monday-pickup if dropping Saturday evening.
What if my host's washing machine breaks?
Inform host immediately; they'll arrange repair or laundry voucher. The 3-5 nearby laundrette options mean you're never stuck.
Are clothes dryers common?
Less common than in Northern Europe — most Athens apartments use balcony lines or interior racks. Athens summer dries clothes within 2-4 hours; winter can take a full day indoors.
Where to put broken electronics?
Public Service Recycling (Public WEEE) collection points exist at major electronics retailers (Public, Kotsovolos, Plaisio) — drop-off free. Don't put electronics in standard bins.
