Every Athens Day Trip Doable on Public Transport

📅 May 12, 2026 ⏱️ 7 min read ✍️ Angel Athens Team
Driving in Greece has its own rewards, but a rental car is not a precondition for leaving Athens. KTEL intercity buses, suburban rail, the Larissis-to-Kalambaka train and the Saronic ferries between them cover almost every day trip worth doing. Here is the honest, comprehensive list.

🚌 The four no-car networks

KTEL intercity buses

Network of regional bus operators covering all of mainland Greece. Departures from Kifisós (Terminal A) for Peloponnese + western Greece, and Liosíon (Terminal B) for central + northern Greece. ktelbus.com for schedules.

Suburban Rail (Proastiakos)

Athens-Corinth, Athens-Chalkida (Halkída), Athens-Kiato lines. Frequent + cheap. €5-€10 to most stops. trainose.gr or hellenictrain.gr.

Intercity train (OSE)

Athens-Thessaloniki + Athens-Kalambáka (Meteora). Comfortable, reliable, scenic. Useful for Meteora day trip. hellenictrain.gr

Saronic ferries from Piraeus

Hydrofoils + conventional ferries to Aegina, Póros, Hydra, Spétses, plus Argosaronic mainland. ferries.gr or operator websites.

🏝️ Saronic-island day trips by ferry

  • Aegina — 40 min hydrofoil, €15-€20 each way. Easiest island day trip. Temple of Aphaia + pistachios + neoclassical port. (See Aegina guide.)
  • Hydra — 90 min hydrofoil, €30-€40 each way. No-cars, aesthetic, full day. (See Hydra guide.)
  • Póros — 60-90 min ferry, €15-€25 each way. Compact harbour, swim bays.
  • Spétses — 2-2.5 h hydrofoil, €40-€50 each way. Doable as long day, easier as overnight.
  • Combined cruises — €100-€140 organised three-island sampler. (See three-island cruise guide.)

🚆 Train day trips

Corinth + Acrocorinth

Suburban rail Athens → Corinth ~1 h, €6-€9. Then €15 taxi to ancient site. (See Corinth guide.)

Meteora (Kalambáka)

Intercity train Athens → Kalambáka 4-5 h, €25-€35 each way. Long day; better as overnight. (See Meteora guide.)

Chalkída (Halkída)

Suburban rail ~1 h 15 min, €8-€11. Euripus Strait current phenomenon, fish tavernas, day trip + family-friendly.

Kiáto + western Peloponnese

Suburban rail to Kiáto, then KTEL bus connections. Useful for Olympic peninsula day trips.

🚐 KTEL bus day trips

  • Delphi — 3 h bus from Liosíon. €17 each way. Doable as long day or better overnight. (See Delphi guide.)
  • Sounion — 1.5 h bus from Pedíon Áreos / Mavrommatáion. €7-€8 each way. Iconic Temple of Poseidon + sunset. (See Sounion guide.)

  • Mt. Parnitha — local bus + cable car. (See Parnitha guide.)

🚌 Athens-Riviera by tram

The Athens tram connects central Athens (Sýntagma) to the entire Athenian Riviera coast: Faliro → Glyfáda → Voúla → Vouliagméni. €1.20-€1.40 ticket. ~70 min Sýntagma to Vouliagméni terminus. Combine with bus 122 onward to Sounion for full Riviera + Sounion day. (See Sounion guide.)

🚂 Athens train + bus stations explained

Where do I leave from?

  • Larissa Station (Stathmós Larísis) — main rail station. Metro Line 2 stop "Stathmós Larísis." Trains to Thessaloníki + Meteora + Corinth (suburban rail also stops here).
  • SKA / Acharnés Railway Centre — northern hub for suburban rail; some long-distance trains stop here.
  • Kifisós KTEL Terminal A — Peloponnese + western mainland (Patras, Olympia, Nafplio, Sparta, Kalamata). Bus 051 from Omonia, or taxi. NOT on metro.
  • Liosíon KTEL Terminal B — central + northern mainland (Delphi, Larissa, Halkida via road). Bus or taxi from city centre.
  • Mavromatéon (Pedíon Áreos) — Attica regional buses (Sounion, Marathon, Vravróna, Lavrio). Walk from Victoria Square. (See KTEL guide.)
  • Piraeus Port — all Saronic + Aegean ferries. Metro Line 1 terminus.

📅 The "no-car day trip" verdict per destination

  • Easy without car: Sounion, Marathon, Eleusis, Aegina, Póros, Hydra, Chalkida, Corinth, Athens Riviera, Mt Parnitha cable car, Lake Vouliagméni.
  • Doable but tighter: Delphi (long bus), Meteora (long train, overnight better), Mycenae/Nafplio/Epidaurus (KTEL + tour), Spétses (long ferry).
  • Better with car: Acrocorinth (taxi from Corinth station works but car easier), east Attica beach circuit, deeper Peloponnese routes, Hosios Loukas + Arachova.
  • Need car or organised tour: rural Mani, deep Pelion, Zagori — multi-day anyway.

🎯 Booking + reservation tips

  1. Train + suburban rail: book online at hellenictrain.gr. Tickets available 1-30 days ahead. Walk-up usually fine for suburban; long-distance reserve.
  2. KTEL buses: book at ktelbus.com (national portal) or at terminal kiosks. Popular routes (Sounion summer, Delphi weekends) reserve a day ahead.
  3. Ferries: ferries.gr or operator websites. Hydrofoils to popular islands reserve in summer.
  4. Cruise tours: GetYourGuide / Viator / direct operator websites. Compare 2-3 options.
  5. Tour aggregators: Athens travel agencies (around Sýntagma + Plaka) sell many of the same tours; sometimes commission-priced higher than direct.

🛡️ Practical tips for car-free day trips

  • Start early: most worthwhile destinations need 6-9 hours away from Athens.
  • Verify schedules: Sunday + holiday schedules reduced for buses.
  • Cash for KTEL + bus: cards now accepted on most lines but not universally.
  • Print or screenshot tickets: low signal in some rural areas.
  • Lunch backup: rural tavernas may close 16:00-19:00 (siesta tradition). Eat before or stagger.
  • Last bus / ferry: verify return time for your destination. Missing the last connection = expensive taxi or overnight.

📅 Three "no-car" day-trip plans for visitors

Plan A — "Classical Greece in a day"

KTEL bus to Sounion at sunset (€7 + 1.5 h). Temple of Poseidon, view, return on the night bus. Half-day version of the classical experience.

Plan B — "Real island day"

Hydrofoil to Aegina (€18 + 40 min). Bus to Aphaia + Agia Marina beach. Lunch at Perdika. Pistachios in town. Last hydrofoil home. (See Aegina guide.)

Plan C — "Sanctuary day"

KTEL bus to Delphi (3 h + €17). Site + museum + lunch in Aráchova. Return on afternoon bus. Long but doable. (See Delphi guide.)

🎯 FAQ

Are buses + trains reliable in Greece?

Buses generally yes — KTEL is well-organised + on time. Trains: suburban + intercity reliable, with occasional strikes (verify before travel days).

English-language information?

hellenictrain.gr + ferries.gr have English. KTEL is mostly Greek + some English. Major terminal counters speak basic English.

Multi-day pass?

No general "Greece pass." Athens has its own metro/tram daily/weekly tickets. KTEL + train each have their own price systems.

Renting a car for a single day?

Possible — €40-€80/day from Athens rental agencies. Worthwhile for east Attica beach circuit or rural Peloponnese; less worthwhile for islands or single sites.

What if there's a strike?

Strikes (apergía) are not uncommon — usually announced 24-48 h ahead. Check news + ferries.gr / hellenictrain.gr the morning of travel. If strike, organised tours often still run.

What's the easiest "first day trip" for new visitors?

Sounion sunset by KTEL bus, or Aegina hydrofoil. Both single-mode transport, predictable, well-supported by Greek infrastructure.
