Day Trip to Póros — A Quieter, Cheaper Alternative to Hydra

📅 May 05, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read ✍️ Angel Athens Team
Póros is what Hydra used to be before Hydra became Hydra. The island sits a few hundred metres off the Peloponnese, divided by a channel narrow enough to throw a stone across. White houses climb up to a clock tower; lemon groves spread out behind. It is a quieter, cheaper day.

📍 Why Póros is unusual

Póros (Πόρος) is the Saronic island closest to the mainland — only ~200 m of water (the Póros channel) separates it from Galatás on the Peloponnese coast. The town is technically built across two islets (Sferiá + Kalávria) connected by a road bridge; the main town climbs up a small hill crowned by the iconic clock tower (1927). Behind the town the island rises into pine-forested hills and inland the famous Lemónodáso (the "lemon forest") of Galatás faces the harbour. Póros is quieter + cheaper than Hydra, retains an authentic Greek feel, and works very well as a day trip.

⛴️ Getting there

Hydrofoil from Piraeus

Flying Cat / Flying Dolphin (Hellenic Seaways, AlphaLines). ~1 h 5-30 min. €15-€25 each way. Multiple daily.

Conventional ferry

Saronic ferry (Argosaronikos). ~2.5 h, €13-€18 each way. Slower + cheaper.

From Galatás (Peloponnese)

Small foot-passenger boats run constantly across the 200 m channel. ~3 min, €1-€2. Useful if combining Póros with a Peloponnese drive.

Booking

ferries.gr or operator websites. Often less crowded than Hydra ferries; less booking-stress.

🏘️ Póros Town

  • Clock Tower (1927) — landmark on top of the small hill above the harbour. 5-10 min walk up via stairs. Panoramic view of channel + Galatás + lemon forest.
  • Whitewashed houses with red-tiled roofs cascading down the hill. Photogenic from the harbour.
  • Harbour promenade — cafés + tavernas. The everyday life of the town visible.
  • Archaeological Museum of Póros — small museum. €3 entry. Local finds + maritime history.
  • Náos Agíou Geórgiou — the main church.

🍋 Lemonodáso (the Lemon Forest)

The lemon forest of Galatás

Across the channel on the Peloponnese, the village of Galatás extends into a sea of ~30,000 lemon trees — the famous Lemonodáso (Λεμονοδάσος). It's an extensive citrus orchard with paths, a small Byzantine chapel (Ágios Geórgios), and a traditional taverna at the centre serving fresh lemonade made from the trees around you. Take a small boat across (€1-€2, runs constantly), then walk 15-20 min through the orchards to the taverna. In spring (March-April) the lemon blossom is intoxicating.

🏛️ Sites on Póros

  • Temple of Poseidon — at the highest point of the island (Vigla peak, ~360 m). Ruins of a 5th-c.-BCE temple. Less impressive than Sounion's but historically significant — the Athenian orator Demosthenes died here in 322 BCE, fleeing Macedonian troops, by drinking poison. Free to visit; ~30 min drive or a long walk from the town.
  • Monastery of Zoodóchos Pigí (1733) — small monastery in pine forest 4 km from town. Beautiful walk + small chapel.
  • Russian Naval Base ruins — 19th-century base used during Russo-Turkish wars. Maritime history.

🏊 Beaches

  • Askéli — main organised beach, sandy + family-friendly. Tavernas + sun beds. ~3 km from town (bus or walk).
  • Kanáli — small bay, sandy. Quieter.
  • Megalo Neoríon + Mikro Neoríon — pine-forested coves. Small beaches.
  • Russian Bay — historical + scenic. Some swimming possible.
  • Galatás-side beaches — the Peloponnese coast across has additional sandy beaches.

🍴 Where to eat

  • Harbour tavernas — Greek classics + fish + sea view. €20-€35 per person.
  • Side-street tavernas — better-priced, less touristy. €15-€25 per person.
  • Lemonodáso taverna (Galatás) — drinks + simple food in the lemon forest. €10-€20 per person.
  • Askéli beach tavernas — beach lunch atmosphere. €18-€30.
  • Local specialties: lemon-everything (lemon pies, lemon marmalade, lemonade), fresh fish, kakaviá fish soup.

📅 The honest one-day plan

Póros + Lemonodáso (8-9 h from Athens)

  1. 09:00: Hydrofoil Piraeus → Póros.
  2. 10:15: Arrive Póros. Coffee at harbour (€4-€6).
  3. 10:45-11:30: Walk up to Clock Tower. Photos.
  4. 11:30-13:00: Cross to Galatás (€1-€2). Walk into Lemonodáso. Lemonade at the orchard taverna.
  5. 13:00-14:30: Lunch (Galatás-side or back on Póros).
  6. 14:30-16:30: Beach time at Askéli OR explore inland (Temple of Poseidon if motivated, otherwise harbour).
  7. 17:00: Coffee + ice cream at harbour.
  8. 18:00: Hydrofoil back. Arrive Piraeus ~19:15.

🛡️ Practical tips

  • Walking shoes — uphill stairs to Clock Tower, optional walks.
  • Cards + cash — both work. Galatás boat needs cash (small change).
  • Sun + heat — open harbour, limited shade. Hat + water + sunscreen.
  • Last hydrofoil back — typically 18:00-19:00 in summer. Verify same-day.
  • Quieter than Hydra — fewer cruise ships + day-trippers. More authentic feel.
  • Spring blossom — March-April lemon flowering = unique experience.
  • Cars allowed on Póros (unlike Hydra) — no special transport restrictions.

🎯 Póros vs alternatives

  • Póros vs Hydra: Hydra more iconic + photogenic + no-cars; Póros quieter, cheaper, more authentic, has lemon forest. Different appeal. (See Hydra guide.)
  • Póros vs Aegina: Aegina has Aphaia temple + pistachios; Póros has Lemonodáso + clock tower + closer feel. Both solid.
  • Póros vs three-island cruise: cruise gives 1.5 h; DIY gives 6+ h. (See cruise guide.)
  • Póros vs Spétses: Spétses larger + more beaches; Póros smaller + closer.

🎯 FAQ

Best month?

March-April for lemon blossom (uniquely fragrant). May-June + September for swimming + comfortable weather. July-August hot but vibrant.

Family-friendly?

Yes — quieter than Hydra, easier walking, sandy Askéli beach for kids, lemon forest as novelty.

Day trip or overnight?

Day trip works fine — Póros is small enough to see in a day. Overnight adds quiet evening + sunrise but isn't essential.

Can I rent a scooter?

Yes — multiple rental shops on Póros. €15-€25/day. Useful for Temple of Poseidon + Askéli + monastery.

Is the temple of Poseidon worth visiting?

Only if you have time + interest in less-visited archaeological sites. Most visitors skip; the harbour + Lemonodáso are the main draws.

Combining with the Peloponnese?

Yes — Póros is great as part of a Saronic-Peloponnese drive. Cross to Galatás, drive south to Methána (sulphur springs), Epidaurus, Náfplio.
