📜 Two-island geography
Paros (~196 km², ~13,700 residents) sits in the heart of the Cyclades. Antíparos (~35 km², ~1,200 residents) sits 1 km off Paros's southwest coast — a 5-minute car-ferry hop. Together they form a natural pair: Paros has scale + range (multiple villages, full beaches, ferry hub), Antíparos offers pace + intimacy (one tiny chora, simple beaches, the famous Cave of Antíparos). Most travellers stay on Paros + day-trip to Antíparos. Some choose Antíparos itself for a slower week. Below: how to plan both.
🏛️ Naoussa — the prettiest harbour in the Cyclades
- Naoussa: northern Paros. Once a quiet fishing village, now a chic destination — but the old port is genuinely beautiful + still functional.
- Old port + Venetian fort ruins: half-submerged 15th-c. fortifications. Octopuses dry on lines outside tavernas.
- White lanes + bougainvillea: small but well-preserved old town behind harbour.
- Restaurants: from authentic tavernas to high-end (the Cyclades' best fine-dining outside Mykonos).
- Nightlife: low-key compared to Mykonos but lively in summer.
🏛️ Parikiá — the capital + ferry port
- Parikiá: ferry arrival point. Whitewashed Cycladic chora behind harbour.
- Panagía Ekatontapylianí ("Church of 100 Doors"): one of Greece's oldest functioning Christian buildings — founded ~326 CE by Constantine's mother Helena. Multiple architectural layers from late Roman/early Byzantine through Ottoman. Free entry; closed midday.
- Frangish Castle: 13th-c. Venetian, built using ancient marble columns + temple stones — visible in walls.
- Archaeological Museum: small. Includes part of Parian Chronicle (3rd-c. BCE marble inscription with Greek history dates).
📜 Parian marble
The world's most prized white marble
Marathí, central Paros, was the source of "lychnites" Parian marble — translucent + fine-grained + prized for sculpture in antiquity. Hermes of Praxiteles, Venus de Milo (some scholars), Nike of Samothrace, much of the Acropolis sculpture — all carved from Parian marble. Quarries operated from ~7th c. BCE to Roman period. Two ancient quarries can still be visited near Marathí — large open chambers cut into the hillside, with abandoned blocks. Free + atmospheric, though access slightly tricky (signs from main road).
🏖️ Paros beaches
Kolymbíthres
Iconic granite-rock formations sculpted by sea + wind. Small coves between rocks. North coast near Naoussa.
Santa María
White sand + dunes, north coast. Beach bar + tavernas. Family-friendly.
Golden Beach (Chryssí Aktí)
South coast. Long sandy. Wind-sport capital — windsurfing world cup hosted regularly.
Pounta
West coast facing Antíparos. Kitesurfing hub. Reliable thermal winds.
Mártselo
Quieter, near Parikiá. Mix of pebbles + sand.
Faraggas
Multiple coves, southwest. Less developed.
🏔️ Inland villages
- Léfkes: most beautiful inland village. Marble-paved lanes, traditional houses, panoramic views to Naxos. Byzantine church + ancient marble paths.
- Marpissa: traditional, less touristed. Three windmills + 16th-c. monastery.
- Mármara: literally "marbles" — built from local quarry stone.
- Pródromos: cluster of whitewashed houses, fortified entrance.
🦋 Petaloúdes — Valley of the Butterflies
- Petaloúdes (Valley of Butterflies): Jersey tiger moths (Euplagia quadripunctaria) congregate by thousands June-September.
- Sheltered valley: with stream + Persian-laurel trees that produce resin attracting moths.
- Visit: ~10 km from Parikiá. €4. Quiet observation rules — moths spook easily.
- Best time: late June + July + August.
🏝️ Antíparos
- Tiny + slow. ~35 km² + ~1,200 permanent residents.
- Antíparos Chóra: single whitewashed village + main pedestrian street with shops + tavernas. Castle remnants from 15th c.
- Cave of Antíparos: spectacular karst cave with stalactites/stalagmites. Used since antiquity. ~400 steps down. Visible inscriptions from ancient travellers; archaeological evidence of cave dwelling. €6. Closed in winter.
- Beaches: Soros, Sifneikós, Apándima, Faneroméni. Mostly undeveloped + uncrowded.
- Famous residents: Tom Hanks + Rita Wilson have a house here (since ~2010); they hold Greek citizenship as honorary Antiparians. Mick Jagger + Madonna also seen. Locals respect celebrity privacy.
- Access: car-ferry from Pounta (Paros) every 30 min, 5-10 min crossing, ~€1.50 foot / €6 car. Or daily passenger ferry from Parikiá.
