The Saronic Gulf Islands — Greek Islands Within Reach of Athens

📅 May 10, 2026 ⏱️ 7 min read ✍️ Angel Athens Team
The Saronic islands are the closest archipelago to Athens — close enough that all four are doable as a day trip, and worth a weekend each if you have the time. Aegina for pistachios and Doric temples. Hydra for the donkeys and the stone harbour. Poros for the easy beach. Spetses for the elegance.

📜 Why these matter

The Saronic Gulf islands sit between Attica + the Peloponnese — all reachable in 1-2 hours by ferry from Piraeus. Unlike the Cyclades, they don't need a flight or full vacation week; they make perfect day-trips, weekend escapes, or short stays. Each has distinct character: Aegina (largest + nearest, pistachio capital, ancient Temple of Aphaia), Hydra (no cars, donkey transport, art-collector heritage), Poros (closest to Peloponnese, family-friendly), Spetses (elegant Venetian-Greek mansions, horse carriages).

🏛️ Aegina — pistachios + Aphaia

  • Largest of the Saronic. ~85 km², ~13,000 residents. ~1 hr 15 min slow ferry, ~40 min hydrofoil from Piraeus.
  • Aegina Town: lively port + neoclassical houses. First capital of independent modern Greek state (1828-1829, before Athens).
  • Temple of Aphaia (~500 BCE): well-preserved Doric temple on east coast. Pediment sculptures now in Munich (controversially). Forms a "sacred triangle" with Parthenon + Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. €6 entry.
  • Pistachios: Aegina pistachios are PDO-protected. Smaller, sweeter, more aromatic than Iranian. Family farms throughout. Buy at Aegina Town shops.
  • Paleochóra: Byzantine ghost-village on hill, ~33 churches in ruins.
  • Beaches: Marathonas, Aigíni, Pérdika.

🏛️ Hydra — no cars, all donkeys

The art-island

Hydra banned all motorised transport in 1950 to preserve its character. The result: donkeys + mules carry luggage, building materials, even refrigerators up the steep stone lanes. The harbour is a perfect amphitheatre of grey-stone mansions built by 18th-c. ship-owning families. Famous residents: Leonard Cohen lived here from 1960; bought his house with a Bond St inheritance + wrote "Bird on the Wire" on it. Sophia Loren filmed "Boy on a Dolphin" here (1957). Patrick Leigh Fermor visited often. DESTE Foundation: contemporary art exhibitions in the old slaughterhouse, summer only. Free.

  • ~1.5 hr ferry from Piraeus (slow), or 1.5 hr hydrofoil.
  • Hydra harbour: arrival point. Pedestrian + donkey only.
  • Beaches: rocky. Mandráki + Vlychós + Avlaki + Plákes — most by water taxi.
  • Hiking: stone paths to Profítis Ilías monastery (1.5 hr up). Spectacular views.
  • Historical Archive Museum: artifacts from 1821 War of Independence — Hydra contributed many ships + admirals.

🏛️ Poros — closest to Peloponnese

  • Tiny strait (~370m) separates Poros from Galatás on Peloponnese — feels almost like a lake.
  • ~1 hr 15 min hydrofoil from Piraeus.
  • Poros Town: clock-tower hilltop landmark. Compact harbour with restaurants + cafés.
  • Lemon Forest (Lemonodásos): on facing Peloponnese coast across narrow strait. ~30,000 lemon + orange trees. Walking + tavernas.
  • Beaches: Askéli, Mégalo Néorio, Russian Bay (anchored Russian fleet here 1828-1829).
  • Best for families: small, walkable, calm, swimmable.

🏛️ Spetses — elegance + horses

  • ~2 hr hydrofoil from Piraeus. Furthest of the four but still doable as day-trip.
  • Spetses Town (Dapiá): elegant 18th-19th c. neoclassical + traditional houses. Old harbour + Old Port (paliós liménas) — boat-building heritage.
  • Limited motor traffic: scooters allowed, cars restricted. Horse-drawn carriages still work as taxis.
  • Bouboulina: Laskarína Bouboulína (1771-1825), naval commander in 1821 War of Independence, native of Spetses. House-museum. €5.
  • Anargýrios + Korgialéneios College: famous boys' boarding school (1927-1983); inspired Fowles's "The Magus".
  • Beaches: Ayía Marína, Ayii Anargýri, Zogeriá, Vrellós.
  • Spétses Mini-Marathon: October. Multi-discipline event (run + swim + bike).

🏝️ Agkístri — the bonus 5th

  • Smaller, less-known. ~13 km². ~1 hr 15 min ferry from Piraeus.
  • Pine forests + clear sea. Beaches: Skála, Hálikiada (clothing-optional, accessed via path).
  • Day-trip-friendly: often combined with Aegina visit.
