Mykonos — Beyond the Influencer Beach Clubs

📅 May 01, 2026 ⏱️ 7 min read ✍️ Angel Athens Team
Mykonos has the loudest reputation in the Cyclades and it earns most of it. Cocktails for €25, beach clubs that charge €120 for two loungers, a famously camera-shy mayor. But it also has, quietly, the best-preserved Cycladic chora in Greece, three near-empty northern beaches and a fishing fleet still leaving at dawn.

📜 The two Mykonos

There are functionally two islands sharing the same 86 km². South-coast Mykonos: Paradise, Super Paradise, Psarou — beach clubs with €25 cocktails + €120 loungers + DJs flown in from Ibiza. International party set. Everywhere else: traditional Cycladic island with whitewashed Chora, fishermen still mending nets at dawn, mountain villages of Ano Mera, three near-empty north-coast beaches, and the sacred archaeological site of Delos a 30-minute boat ride away. Visiting only the south is like visiting Rome and seeing only the Trevi Fountain. Below: how to actually see the island.

🏛️ Chora — the maze that confounds invaders

  • Mykonos Town (Chora): deliberately built as a labyrinth in 16th-17th c. to confuse pirates. Streets dead-end, double back, narrow without warning. Getting lost is the point.
  • Little Venice (Alefkándra): medieval houses with balconies hanging directly over the sea. Built by wealthy 18th-c. merchants. Now full of bars; sunset crowds.
  • The Windmills (Káto Mýloi): 16th-c. white stone windmills on the hill above Chora. Once ground grain for sea-trade ships. Five remain visible. Iconic photo-spot at sunset.
  • Panagia Paraportiani: church of 5 chapels merged into one whitewashed organic form. 14th-17th c. construction. One of Greece's most photographed churches.
  • Castle area + Aegean Maritime Museum: small but excellent. €4.

🏛️ Delos — the sacred island

Birthplace of Apollo + Artemis

Tiny uninhabited Delos lies 2 km southwest of Mykonos. According to myth, Leto gave birth here to Apollo + Artemis. From ~700 BCE to ~100 BCE, Delos was the religious + commercial centre of the Aegean — a sanctuary state inhabited only by priests. UNESCO World Heritage 1990. Site includes: Terrace of the Lions (originals in museum, replicas on site), House of Cleopatra + House of Dionysus mosaics, the Sacred Way, Temple of Apollo. Visiting: boats from Mykonos Old Port at 9, 10, 11 AM (~€25 RT). Site €12. Last boat back ~2-3 PM. Bring water + hat — no shade, brutal sun. Closed Tuesdays.

🏖️ Beach geography (north vs south)

South: Party

Paradise, Super Paradise, Psarou, Paranga. Loud music, expensive, scene. Avoid if seeking calm.

South: Family

Platís Gialós, Ornos. Sandy, sheltered, family-friendly. Hotels + tavernas. Less party.

North: Wild

Fokos, Mersíni, Agios Sostis. Almost empty. No sunbeds. North wind makes them rougher; bring everything.

East coast

Eliá, Kalo Livadi, Kalafati. Larger beaches, mix of upscale + casual. Wind-protected.

🏛️ Áno Méra — the inland village

  • Mykonos's only inland village. ~6 km east of Chora.
  • Tourliani Monastery: 16th-c. Beautiful whitewashed courtyard + ornate carved-wood iconostasis. Free entry; modest dress.
  • Quieter, cheaper: tavernas charge ~30-40% less than Chora.
  • Authentic feel: locals + Greek tourists predominate. Mid-level hotels here are good base for budget travellers.

📊 At a glance

~86 km²

Area. ~10,700 permanent residents.

~1.5 million

Annual visitors — among Greece's busiest islands.

UNESCO 1990

Delos — sacred sanctuary + birthplace of Apollo.

5 windmills

Káto Mýloi remaining of original 16. Iconic.

🍽️ Food beyond beach clubs

  • Kopanistí: spicy, peppery cheese unique to Mykonos. PDO-protected.
  • Louza: cured pork loin (similar to capicola). Mykonian specialty.
  • Cretan-Mykonian crossover: salads, ouzo, fresh fish.
  • Authentic tavernas: Áno Méra + back-streets of Chora + fishing port at Kalafati. Ask locals; avoid restaurants with English-only menus + photos.

💸 The costs (be ready)

  • Beach club lounger: €40-150 depending on club + season.
  • Cocktail at top venue: €18-30.
  • Mid-range hotel July-August: €250-500/night.
  • Budget room (Áno Méra/back streets): €70-150 still possible in shoulder.
  • Taxi from airport to Chora: ~€15-25.
  • Restaurant dinner: €30-50/person modest, €80-150 upscale.

🚗 Getting around

  • Buses (KTEL): connect Chora to all main beaches + Áno Méra. Cheap (€2-3). Full schedule online.
  • ATV / scooter: popular but accident-prone. Wind. Wear helmets.
  • Car rental: ~€40-80/day in season. Book ahead.
  • Taxis: limited fleet; queue on apps long in summer.
  • Walking: Chora is fully pedestrian.

✈️ Getting to Mykonos

  • Airport (JMK): international + domestic. Direct flights summer from London, Paris, Rome, etc. Athens shuttle ~30 min.
  • Ferry from Piraeus: slow ~5-6 hrs (€35-50), fast ~3 hrs (€60-90).
  • Ferry from Rafina: often faster + cheaper. ~2-4 hrs.
  • Inter-Cyclades: Tinos (15 min), Naxos, Santorini connections.

📅 When to go

  • July-August: peak everything — peak crowds, peak prices, peak meltémi (north wind). Book 4+ months ahead.
  • June + September: warm sea, lighter crowds, better prices. Best month overall.
  • May + October: pleasant, much cheaper, but some clubs/beaches close.
  • Off-season: most tourist services close from late October to early May.

🎯 The honest itinerary

  • Day 1: Chora exploration + Little Venice sunset + Panagia Paraportiani.
  • Day 2: Delos morning boat (8-2 PM). South-coast beach afternoon.
  • Day 3: Áno Méra + Tourlianí + dinner there.
  • Day 4: North-coast wild beaches (Fokos / Mersíni). Bring everything.
  • Day 5: Boat tour of nearby islets / Rhenia + Delos combined.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Only seeing south coast — biggest mistake. North coast + Delos transform the experience.
  • Not booking accommodation early — June-August fills 4-6 months ahead.
  • Underestimating meltémi wind — July-August north wind regularly forces ferry cancellations + makes north beaches harsh.
  • Driving inebriated — Mykonos has high accident rate on ATVs after parties. Use cabs.
  • Visiting Delos in afternoon — last boat back ~3 PM. Plan morning visit.
